Arlington Elementary offers a comprehensive K-5 curriculum, which focuses on building a solid foundation in reading/language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies. Our district is 1:1 with iPads in K-12 and technology is embedded in daily instruction. Each elementary school also has a STEM Lab and full time STEM teacher who provides instruction for all K-5 students. In addition to our core curriculum, students also receive weekly instruction from specialty teachers in art, music, and physical education and participate in biweekly library classes and social classes taught by our full-time guidance counselors. Both of our elementary schools have been recognized multiple years as Tennessee Reward Schools for academic achievement. Explore below to learn more about what we offer.

K-5 Curriculum
K-5 Curriculum
Our locally developed ACS curriculum guides provide an outline of our curriculum and a recommended teaching order for a particular course/grade-level. These documents provide the basis for what teachers will teach and students will learn in the classrooms throughout ACS.

1:1 iPad Program
A Device for Everyone
All teachers and students are equipped with an iPad to help critically engage them in classroom lessons. Through the use of these devices, we are creating powerful learning environments that offer our students new, engaging opportunities that target critical thinking and problem-solving skills, support responsible communication and collaboration, and prepare our students to live and work in our ever-changing technological world.

STEM
STEM for All
STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math – disciplines that AES believes are the key to a well-rounded education of the 21st century.
- STEM uses project based learning to allow students to extend classroom knowledge and “show what they know” in ways that engage every type of learner.
- STEM teaches the “soft skills” (collaboration, communication, creativity, and critical thinking) by encouraging students to work together to achieve a common goal. These skills are in high demand for future jobs and career paths!
- STEM applies skills that can translate into all kinds of classrooms and grows with each child over the course of their time at AES.
- STEM gives students the confidence to take risks, learn from failures, and persist through challenges to find solutions to problems.

Art
Art
AES believes Art is part of the critical foundation in a child's learning. We strive to foster a creativity-based environment where students are provided the opportunities and skill sets to express individual and collaborative meanings of the world around them.
Art is limitless and extends beyond one subject. Students at AES will make connections between visual arts and other disciplines, from history and math to science and nature.
- Geometry Through Art – Students will learn to identify shapes and sizes. They'll classify shapes, distinguishing 3-D vs. 2-D. Students will then take what they've learned and display it through a variety of artistic methods.
- Social Studies Through Art – Art changes through history. The Art of today is far different from the Art of early civilizations. Students will be able to identify artwork from different cultures, times and places.
- History Through Art – History is all around us, including through various pieces of art. Students will learn to explore contexts of exemplary artwork and express how, when and where we live affects the art we make.
- Vocablulary Through Art – Art not only teaches about styles, colors and techniques, but also about vocabulary. Students will learn vocabulary to speak about artwork, giving them the tools necessary to discuss forms of art and the main ideas behind them.

Music
Music
Music classes give students a foundation in singing, playing instruments, reading, notating, and performance. We endeavor to see that all students leave elementary school with a love of music that they can carry into adulthood. Students will learn to read, write, and perform music to prepare them for middle school music experiences, and each grade level will have the opportunity to perform in an annual music program. The music curriculum at AES is based on the Tennessee Academic Standards for Fine Ats in music.

P.E.
Physical Education
AES has made a commitment to prepare students to live healthy, productive and physically active lives for the 21st Century.
We will provide every student with a variety of challenges that will contribute to the development and maintenance of their physical, cognitive and affective well-being.
We stress the importance of Physical Education at an early age, as it is a lifelong process, so we want to give our students the tools and mindset to lead a healthy life.
From the values of physical activity to the knowledge of movement and space awareness, students will learn to apply physical education concepts to everyday life.
Perhaps most critical, AES believes fundamentally the importance of teaching personal and social responsibility through P.E. Students will learn about respect for self and others, how to give respectful feedback to peers and learn to encourage others.
